All Quiet on the Western Front

On the 100th Anniversary of World War I, several of us at Maryville are reading All Quiet on the Western Front.

Here’s the introduction to the novel:  ‘This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it.  It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.”

What we’re reading in the loft

If you are interested in Benedictine spirituality, I recommend Inside the School of Charity: Lessons from the Monastery by Trisha Day. Day spent three months at Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey, a community of Cistercian nuns. In this book, she shares thoughts about the lives of the Cistercians and reflects on how to bring aspects of their lives into our own lives outside the monastery.

Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul

Sunday, June 29:  May I be like Peter & Paul, who listened to God, finished the race & kept the faith. Both loved God & were radiant with joy.
