Lunch and Learn: Nonprofit Organizations! Students interested in nonprofit organizations and organizational leadership or communication careers within these organizations can join Dr. Dohrman at 12:30 TODAY (Wednesday) in the dining hall at a big table near the window side of the hall for a conversation about nonprofit organizational structures, jobs, and resources in St. Louis. Questions such as: What is a nonprofit? How do nonprofits fund their organizations? What could I do in a nonprofit organization with my communication degree? will be answered…and more! I hope to see you there!

Save the Date – Inaugural Master’s Graduation ReceptionWe are honoring the inaugural Master of Arts in Strategic Communication & Leadership graduates on Friday, May 4, with a hooding ceremony and reception from 5 to 6 p.m. on the Maryville campus (location to be announced later).  Our first four graduates are:  Mr. Maxwell Havens, Ms. Britney Moore, Ms. Rachel Richardson, and Ms. Heather Sadi. We are thrilled for each of these graduates and all of our students are welcome to attend this ceremony to wish these inaugural gradautes well. Please RSVP todshearer@maryville.edu by April 24th if you would like to attend.

IABC April Social Media Seminar: The International Association of Business Communicators is hosting a half-day session about social media on April 19th at the Center of Clayton. They have a great line up of speakers and networking time is also built into the schedule. The cost is $50 for students but that price doubles once you graduate, so take advantage of the student price while you can. Registration and more information can be found on their website. If the cost seems too high, consider this: IABC-St Louis is looking for someone to assist with light administrative duties such as online database management, monthly meeting prep and managing the IABC email inbox (approx. 2-5 hours/week). In exchange, IABC St. Louis will pay for your annual IABC membership and monthly professional development meetings. For more information, please contact Jessi Goodhart at jgoodhart@pdca.org. IABC also offers free webinars that anyone can attend if you want to learn something new without paying anything!

Plan to attend the 2012 Research Symposium! The Symposium will be held April 20th starting at 4pm in ABAC 3249. Several student will be presenting their research and we have a great keynote speaker lined up, Halcyone Brown, who earned her degree from Maryville some years ago and now is working at the Science Center doing volunteer and intern management. She is excited to return to campus and we are lucky she is willing to speak about volunteer management at a nonprofit organization. This should be a great event. We hope to see you there!

Young Nonprofit Professionals Networking April Luncheon: YNPN is hosting their April Luncheon on the topic of nonprofit finance on Thursday, April 19th from 11:30-1pm at the Central Reform Congregation in the Central West End. This event is $5 and is a great chance to meet some other young people interested in nonprofit organizations. Save the date for their May and June events, too!
  • May:  Speed Networking/ Happy Hour in Partnership with AmeriCorps St. Louis, Thursday, May 17, 5:30-8p.m.
  • June: Nonprofit Messaging, Thursday, June 21,  11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.

What We’re Reading:  Up this week...an article about Facebook’s choice of the Nasdaq for their IPO.  It’s important to understand the IPO process, especially if you are interested in a corporate or technology-driven organization. Enjoy!
