We have decided to transition to more frequent student communication via a Canvas course for our students where we can post announcements and internship postings as soon as they come in. Students, keep an eye out for the new Communication Canvas course on your Canvas dashboard. For alumni, friends of the program, and colleagues, please keep an eye on our Twitter account @MaryvilleComm and our website to stay in the loop about the developments in our program.

Announcements

  • Welcome New Students!: Our faculty would like to welcome our new graduate students and our new majors and minors who transferred into the program for this Spring 2016 semester!
  • New Undergraduate Program Director: Effective August 2016, Professor Dustin York will take over the leadership role of the undergraduate communication program! We are delighted for the program to develop under his direction and we look forward to seeing our community blossom in new ways in the coming year!
  • Date for Senior Portfolio Defense: The Senior Portfolio Defense will be held on Friday, May 6 from 1-2pm in Buder Commons. Mark your calendar now to come and see the portfolios that our seniors have developed.
    Advising for Summer and Fall 2016: Your adviser or life coach will be contacting you by early March to arrange your advising appointment to plan for summer and fall classes. Registration opensMarch 29th.
  • Withdrawal Deadline: The last day to withdraw from full semester classes is April 1st. Go to the Student Service Center to get the form if you are interested in withdrawing from a class. It will have implications for your transcript and financial aid, so be sure to ask the Registrar about your schedule and the impact of the withdrawal before making your final decision.
  • Summer Class Offerings: Here are the classes we are offering this summer:
    • COMM 397-01: Event Planning with Dr. Dohrman on Wednesdays from June 1-29 plus a few shifts at our class client’s event
    • COMM 597-01: Political Communication with Dr. York on Thursday nights from 5/12-6/30
    • Study Abroad: Dr. Carver is offering graduate credit for a two week program in Lugano, Switzerland. Please contact her directly for details at CLCARVER@maryville.edu.

Internship Opportunities

  • Hauser Group: The Hauser Group is preparing to hire their summer interns. Applications are dueMarch 15th and the intern would work 15-20 hours a week at their firm near campus. This is a fantastic opportunity to work at a great agency. Details.
  • Monsanto Fund: The Monsanto Fund is looking to replace their previous Maryville intern with another intern who would work in a paid position for 20 hours a week. They are looking for someone who could commit to a one year position and you would help with a variety of tasks associated with their philanthropic arm. Details.
  • Anvil: This local firm (co-owned by a Maryville alumna!) is looking for a summer intern to work on a variety of social media analytics tasks. Contact Jenny Dibble for more information and to apply.
  • Energizer: This company located right by campus is looking for several interns for this summer to work 20 hours a week (paid) on a variety of communication tasks. Details.
  • TedX Gateway Arch: For students looking for a part-time internship, TedX located at the TRex incubator for entrepreneurs downtown is looking for an intern to work 8-10 hours a week at their organization which organizes local TED Talk events. Several Maryville students have interned at this organization and had very positive experiences. Send your resume to Steve to apply.
  • The ALS Association is looking for two interns for this summer: a communication intern and adevelopment and special events intern. This is a great organization and would be great experience!
  • Cat5 Commerce: Cat5 is a local social media commerce organization located in Chesterfield and they are looking for summer interns. March 1 is the deadline to apply. Details.
  • Health Literacy Missouri: This local organization is looking for summer interns to work at their downtown office. Details.
  • GlynnDevins Marketing and Advertising: This organization is located in Kansas City and they are looking for full time, paid interns for Summer 2016 to work at their firm. It looks like a very interesting organization! Details.
  • Andrea’s Gluten Free: This local food company is looking for a film/communication intern to help create short demonstration videos of the company’s products being used in various recipes. If you are interested, contact Andrea directly.
  • Dr. Pearlman & Associates: This local mental health organization is looking for an intern to work 5-10 hours a week (unpaid) working on press releases and various communication and promotional tasks. Contact Dr. Bryan Pearlman to apply.
  • Cole & Company: Cole & Company is a local startup looking to hire a social media intern for $11/hour to help with a variety of social media marketing tasks. To inquire about the position, contact Gregg Coledirectly.
  • The GLVC is looking for several students to work during the March 3-6 tournament doing a variety of broadcasting tasks. This is a paid position and it is short-term, but would be great experience for students interested in athletics or broadcasting. Details. Contact Jeff Smith for more information.
  • Borgen Project: This nonprofit works on global poverty issues and they are looking for two interns.Details.

  • Maryville myCareer: For many more opportunities, be sure to look at Maryville’s myCareer website.It is a wonderful resource where a lot of St. Louis companies send their job postings.
  • The Rome Group has dozens of part-time jobs available at local nonprofits doing communication work. Check out the list here and consider switching your current part-time job to something on this list as a way to build your resume through paid, part-time work!

Networking Opportunities

  • Career Fair for Arts & Sciences Students happening at Maryville: The Career Office on campus is hosting a career fair for students in Arts & Sciences and it is a MUST for communication students nearing the end of their time at Maryville or any student looking for an internship. Over 17 agencies and firms in the St. Louis area will be represented. The event will happen on Wednesday, February 24th at 4:30pm in the DUC Atrium. Bring copies of your resume!   • IABC Coffee with Communicators (designed for Students): The International Association for Business Communication – St. Louis Chapter has created an event just for you! This event is a coffee and conversation event for students to talk with professionals in the field on Saturday, February 20th from 10-11am at the Bread Company at 10336 Clayton Road. This would be a fantastic way for students and recent alum to make a great impression – just by attending! I hope to have several of you sign up to go! This is a free event. Details.
  • The Social Media Club of St. Louis has their monthly ON TAP Speaker events on the third Wednesday of each month at Llewelyn’s in Webster Groves. This is a free event and Dr. Dohrman is almost always there near the check in table, so it would be a great event for you to attend! Details.
  • The Midwest Digital Marketing Conference (formerly called UMSL Digital) is one of the premier events of the year for networking within the field of communication. The event costs just $45 for students and it will be held at Union Station on Thursday, April 21st. Register here.
  • The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network is offering a new mentoring program where you could be matched with a working professional. You must apply by March 8 to be considered for this program. The application and more information is on their website.
