LDT Training Workshops: LDT hosts training workshops regularly throughout the semester. We have provided links to these sessions below, so that you can view them at your own pace and pleasure. (Select the title of the session to view the recording)
- D2L: An Overview for Beginners & First Time Users: Are you a new faculty member on campus OR a faculty member who could use a D2L refresher ? If so, “D2L-Getting Started,” will give you a great overview of the Desire2Learn system, the learning management system on campus. This session will cover the basics of D2L, giving you an overview of the system, and the tools that are available.
- D2L-Building it in—Using the Content Tool to Effectively Organize Course Materials: This session focuses on the “Content” tool in D2L. Content is a place where the instructor will “build” their course by adding items like a syllabus, course PowerPoints, links to websites…etc. (This session was recorded on August 17th, 2013).
- D2L-Using the Dropbox to Collect & Grade Student Homework Digitally: This session is about the “Dropbox” tool in D2L. The Dropbox is a repository for students to submit assignments. Once submitted, faculty then have the ability to view and grade these assignments online. (This session was recorded on August 6th, 2013).
- D2L-News, Classlist, & Discussions: Using Effective Methods for Digital Communication: This session focuses on the “News,” “Classlist”, and “Discussion” tools in D2L. All of these tools can be used to communicate with your students. The session focuses on how the “technical” aspect of using these tools and best practices. (This session was recorded on August 7th, 2013).
- D2L-Set Up & Manage Grades & Gradebook Settings: This session focuses on the grades area within D2L. Specifically, the session covers the grades “Setup Wizard,” creating grade items/categories, entering grades, and releasing final grades to students. (This session was recorded on August 9th, 2013).
- Qualtrics: This session provides an in-depth look at Qualtrics, our survey creation tool on campus. Maryville University has a campus wide licence for Qualtrics, which means that all faculty staff, and students can have an account. Topics during this recorded session include: “How to set up an account,” “How to create survey questions,” How to customize a survey,” How to distribute a survey,” and “How to analyze survey results.”
- VoiceThread: This session gives a complete overview of VoiceThread. Topics during this recorded session include: “What is VoiceThread,” “How to log into VoiceThread,” “Uploading content,” “Commenting,” “Sharing a VoiceThread,” “Managing your VoiceThreads,” and “Navigating withing a VoiceThread.”
Tech Associate Presentations: Each year LDT selects a handful of faculty to serve as “Tech Associates.” A Tech Associate helps LDT by piloting new technologies, relating technology news back to their departments, and leading a few workshops on how they are using technology in the classroom. - Motivating & Engaging Students Through Gamification: This session, Presented by Karen Fletcher (School of Business), discusses how she is actively using “Gamification” in her University Seminar course. - Snow Day Solution: This session discusses how to transition your class online in the event of a “snow storm.” In addition, several online tools are discussed that will be helpful for replacing activities done in the “physical” classroom. - Google Apps and the Classroom: This session discusses how to incorporate Google Apps in the classroom. In addtion, Google Documents and Google Sites are explored in great detail. - Staying Productive & Organized: This session discusses tips & tricks for staying organized in your Microsoft Outlook Inbox. In addition, an overview of internet sites and smartphone apps that are designed to keep the user productive and organized is given. - Universal Design & Web Accessibility: This session defines ”Universal Design” and accompanying principals, identifies expert recommendations for making online learning environments accessible, summarizes national & local initiatives for improving universal design, shares how respective institutions in the St. Louis are are handling this issue, and identifies relevant resources related to online accessibility. - Encouraging Academic Honesty: This session discusses tactics that instructors and instructional designers can take within an LMS to “encourage academic honesty.” This includes, but is not limited to: setting up restrictions on quizzes, creating random question blocks, checking for plagiarism, and rephrasing questions to assess higher level learning.
