Lunch and Learn: One of our students, Lindsey Conboy, transferred to Maryville this past Fall and has been interning at the Delmar Loop and doing some neat event planning and urban planning work in that organization. She kindly accepted my invitation to share what she is up to at her internship and what she has learned in her role from the conversation with all of us this Wednesday (tomorrow) at 1pm in the Maryville dining hall. Come and look for Rebecca and Lindsey at one of the tables and join us to chat more about internships in St. Louis. Lindsey mentioned that the organization is looking for more interns, so if you are interested in the city, urban planning, and/or event planning, I hope to see you there!
YNPN Event this Thursday: For those of you interested in networking within the nonprofit community, I want to encourage you to attend this Thursday’s Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) event. The event is a “Meeting the Executive Directors” event where you will be able toThe event will be held from 11:30am-1pm at the United Way-St. Louis office in downtown St. Louis at 910 North 11th Street.
CSPRC Event this Friday: The Community Service Public Relations Council is hosting an event this Friday, March 16th at 10am at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on the status of women in Missouri. This event is free but reservations are required. There are a series of speakers including people from health care organizations, the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life at UMSL, the Foundation for Missouri Women, and more. Dr. Dohrman will be attending the event and would be glad to have any students come along to talk about this important issue. To reserve a space at the event, email info@stlpressclub.org with your name and the event name/date.

6th Annual Race Against Violence at Maryville on April 1st:  Mark your calendars and plan to attend the 6th annual Maryville Race Against Violence, Sunday, April 1st at 1pm. It is a family friendly event, with something for everyone. 1 mile fun walk, 5K run/ walk. $20 for all non-students, $5 for students, Kids 12 and under FREE. All proceeds are donated to Safe Connections to support victims of domestic violence. Register the week before in the Gander Dining Hall during lunch or online or on site the day of the Race. The attached flyer has more information.

On-Campus Housing Option: Some communication students have mentioned wanting to live near each other next year in the dorms on campus and Sarah Kwak, who works in Residence Life, said that she would be happy to help get a group of rooms together for any interested student. Feel free to e-mail Sarah at skwak@maryville.eduSarah actually earned her BA and MA in journalism/communication, so she’s a great resource for us on campus!

 

Recent Internship Opportunities: Trailnet is looking for a Marketing and Communications intern to begin immediately and to continue into the summer. For students interested in the outdoors, health, and wellness, this might be a great choice! A second internship opportunity that Crickett Leber, one of our majors, recommended is at Safe Connections, an organization focused on ending violence against women. They are looking for someone with strong writing skills to intern for 20 hours/week in their development office. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Deb Cottin right away a Deb@Safeconnections.org or by phone at 314-646-7500. The internship could possibly continue into future semesters.
Student/Alumni News: Mindi Haas has signed on for a summer internship in the advancement/development office at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville, IL. Congrats, Mindi! Vinita Kaiser recently had some copy published in Alive Magazine! Amazing! Attached is a photo of what she wrote. We are proud of you both and all of our students! (Have you recently accepted an internship or position? If so, tell me about it so I can include it in UGAB!)
PRSA – St. Louis event at SLU: On Friday, March 23rd from 10am-3pm, PRSA-St. Louis will be hosting a Pro-Am (Professional-Amateur meaning this event is designed to bring seasoned professionals and students/new professionals together)  Day on SLU’s Campus. Dr. Dohrman is planning to attend the event, so please register and come! There is a $25/student fee for the event.

What We’re Reading:  Up this week…NextSTL’s take on the GOOD Ideas event that happened last week at the Contemporary Art Museum. This event brought together different teams that proposed ideas to improve the city of St. Louis. It was a great event with some very interesting presentations and ideas. Happy reading!

Class News: Congratulations to everyone who completed an 8-week class last week and good luck to everyone who is starting a class this week. Please consider submitting your final papers from your class that just ended to the 2nd Annual Research Symposium!

Fall Registration: Advising appointments will occur in the next two weeks and fall registration begins the week of March 26th. Be sure to register early to make sure you get a seat in the classes you want. Feel free to e-mail your advisor some times that work for you to meet to get the process started for setting up an advising appointment.

Internship/Volunteer Opportunity at Lydia’s House: If you are interested in volunteering or interning atLydia’s House, which provides transitional housing for abused women and their children, please see the attached document. They are looking for people with communication backgrounds.

Summer Class on Strategic Communication Writing: This summer, we are offering Strategic Communication Writing (COMM 547) for students interested in studying writing skills and pieces in communication. We are partnering with two nonprofit organizations and students in this class will design and write eight pieces tailored around an event idea for these organizations.

Pawprint Design and Layout: Pawprint, Maryville’s student newspaper, is looking for someone to design and lay out What I Wish I Knew (the booklet given to incoming students at Maryville each year at orientation) into a hard copy since last year it was only developed online. Any student interested in doing the design and layout for this book is eligible to earn three credits in the second eight week session this semester. 

Pawprint Update: Maryville’s student newspaper, Pawprint, is making huge strides this semester. Last week the site hit the 1000-reader mark! They are always looking for writers, advertising sales people, etc, so if you are interested in this opportunity, please e-mail Jennifer at jkorte@maryvlle.edu.
Fleishman-Hillard Internship Deadline Coming Up: The deadline for summer internships at Fleishman-Hillard is March 1. These paid, full-time internships are ideal for seniors or recent graduates who have had at least one previous internship experience. Several of our students visited F-H last semester and learned about this wonderful organization. We hope you’ll consider applying! See the attached document for more information.

Event Critique/Volunteer Opportunity: On April 28th, 4-5 selected students from our program will be attended a fundraising gala in Grand Center (Sheldon Hall) for a local nonprofit organization. We will do some volunteering tasks at the event, and we will also act as “critics” and provide the organization with written feedback about how they could improve the event. If you are interested in event planning and would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please e-mail Rebecca Dohrman at rldohrman@maryville.edu with a few sentences about your interest and confirming that you are available that evening. This is a unique opportunity that we are very excited about!

Macy’s Professional Dress for Career Success: This program will give several Maryville students the opportunity to work with a Macy’s Personal Shopper to select updates for your professional wardrobe. See the attached document for more information. The deadline is March 2nd.

Recent Job Opportunity: The Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis (located in Chesterfield) is looking for a Communications and Development Manager.  This is a great entry-level position for students who graduate with a communication degree. We encourage you to review the job posting to become more aware of the current market in communication. It looks like fun!

Here is one from last week: What do these three things have in common: dogs, diamonds, and double plays? Answer: They are all someone’s best friend (a man’s, a girl’s, and a pitcher’s).

These paid, full-time internships are ideal for seniors or recent graduates who have had at least one previous internship experience. Several of our students visited F-H last semester and learned about this wonderful organization. We hope you’ll consider applying! See the attached document for more information.

Young Nonprofit Professionals Network: The February YNPN event is a panel discussion at Schlafly Branch Public Library in the Central West End on Wednesday, FEbruary 29th from 4-6pm. This event will feature a Senior VP from Fleishman-Hillard, an Assistant Attorney General, and a Senior VP from the United Way. The topic will be “In Nonprofits We Trust.” It will no doubt be a lot of fun and it is free, so please mark your calendars if you would like to attend.

NCA Conference: The National Communication Association Conference is one of the largest and most interesting communication conferences in the field of communication. If you are interested in attending the conference this November in Orlando, consider sending one of your research papers in for consideration. New Photography Blog: Professor Scott Angus has created a new photography blog for Maryville students interested in photography. Professor Angus’ classes are a great elective for communication students to learn photography skills!

What is UGAB? The Undergraduate Announcement Board is the new weekly newsletter for the undergraduate Communication program at Maryville University. Day students, Weekend/Evening students, Majors, Minors, etc. are all welcome to receive this newsletter. You are receiving this because you are a current or recent Communication major or minor at Maryville University. I’ll include program highlights, internship opportunities, scheduling information, faculty highlights, class project successes, etc. in future newsletters to help keep you informed about all that is happening in the program.
