New Notices
Capstone Documents Attached: Every MA student in Organizational Leadership and Communication must complete one of three thesis options to graduate from the program. We have finalized the documents explaining this process and I’ve attached them to this e-mail. The comprehensive exam process is the same for ORGL and COMM, so that document is titled “Comprehensive Exam Option.” The other two options are more complicated and involve working with a faculty advisor and therefore are a bit different for ORGL and COMM. To review the process for the thesis and applied project options, please make sure you select the appropriate attached document starting with COMM or ORGL. Please see your advisor for answers to any questions you may have. We are thrilled that these documents are finished so that each of you knows exactly what is involved in each capstone option.
Student Maryville Business Cards: One of Dr. Carver’s students found a great resource for all Maryville alums and current students: virtually free business cards that are designed specifically for Maryville students! You can get more information here. I’ve put information about a business card contest for our COMM students on our Facebook page. Like us to find out how you can win a gift card to Kaldis by handing me something specific!
Summer Research Fellowship: The Grunig PRIME Research Fellowship is awarded on an annual basis to a graduate student who would like to work at PRIME Research’s Ann Arbor, MI office for six weeks following an academic year. The fellows work on data collection, analysis, and interpretation of research results. Fells are awarded a $5,000 stipend and free housing and the chance to produce a high-quality research paper as part of the fellowship. Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate student and at least one methodology course in research methods to apply. The deadline is February 15!
Organizational Development Network St. Louis Conference: The 2012 STL-ODN Conference is being held on February 29th from 8:30am-5:30pm at the Double Tree Hotel in Chesterfield. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the field of OD. There is a $135 fee to attend this conference for non-members of ODN.
CSPRC (Communication Service Public Relations Council): CSPRC’s February 14 Luncheon Meeting is being held at the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel from 11:30-1:15 on Valentine’s Day. The topic for the meeting is “Love Your Donor, Love Your Volunteer, Love Yourself” and it promises to be a great professional development and networking opportunity. The fee for students is just $20.
Faculty Notes: Porismita Borah had an article published in one of the top journals in Communication, Seeking more information and conversations: Influence of competitive frames and motivated processing.Communication Research, 38 (3), 303-325. Porismita Borah also has an article forthcoming with her colleagues from University of Wisconsin-Madison, about Facebook and political participation. A new space for political expression: Predictors of political Facebook use and its democratic consequences. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. Congratulations Dr. Borah on these great achievements!
What We’re Reading: What We’re Reading will include links to interesting articles, websites, and essays that are in the news right now. Some will be related to communication and some are just for fun. Up this week…..Facebook is about to go public and everyone is talking about the power and relevance of social media in our individual lives and society. The New York Times has a short neat video documenting the evolution of Facebook that’s worth a look.
Reminder: Summer 2012 registration begins February 27th. The latest list of ORGL and COMM graduate courses being offered this summer is attached.
