Greetings Faculty! We hope your summer has been relaxing, productive, or maybe even both.

Thank you for your participation, feedback, and openness to new ideas with us. We’ve enjoyed learning what faculty want and need for professional development, and we hope we will continue to receive your responses once the semester begins.

REAL (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Learning), Maryville’s fall professional development week, is coming up August 15-19th, and we wanted to share details and give you a link to a preview of the schedule.

While the format will be similar to last year—multiple, simultaneous sessions that you choose on your own—here’s what’s new this year, based on recommendations from you:

-Sessions are color coded according to three strands: Diversity, Technology, Pedagogy, with additional sessions called On Display, featuring faculty art, research, and examples of teaching

-Sessions are longer, with time in between for movement

-No repeated sessions

-Sessions will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with breakfast and lunch provided by the Center for Teaching and Learning

-Wednesday is reserved for Departmental and disciplinary retreats—you’ll hear from your Dean or Associate Dean about your plans if you haven’t already

-On Thursday, Poster sessions—from University Library, Student Success, Center for Teaching and Learning, and many more—allow relaxed and personal sharing of information

-Thursday afternoon features relevant movie screenings followed by discussion

-Friday morning will debut Teaching Triads for new faculty and teaching discussion circles beginning at 10:00.

-A special outdoor lunch event for Friday, with food trucks, tie-dying, and live music

-Friday afternoon will allow time for business as needed; your Dean, Program Coordinator, or Committee chair will tell you if anything is planned. At the same time, we will have workshops specifically for adjunct faculty—look for a call for your optional participation .

-Next: the debut of our new CTL app and faculty events calendar and registration system!

Since it is a Google doc, it will be updated as we get closer, with no need for new email attachments or revised documents. Keep in mind that, like everything in life, it is subject to change. We’ll post it on our Center for Teaching and Learning webpage soon, and we’ll be in touch with detailed registration information.

Thank you again, and we’re looking forward to a terrific week.
