Practical Training is a benefit available to international students who have completed a full academic year of study and who currently hold F-1 non-immigrant status. It allows you to obtain experience applying the knowledge that you have obtained through your program of study by participating in an internship, practicum, or other such experience either as a volunteer or through paid employment. Prior to participating in practical training you must obtain authorization.
If you re-enter the US using a new SEVIS record and new form I-20 after your previous record was completed or terminated, you will need to complete another academic year of full-time study before you will become eligible for practical training.
If you are a graduate student, and your program of study requires that all students in the program complete practical training during the first year, the 1-year waiting period requirement can be waived.
