Canvas Quiz Tips

Here are a couple tips to help make your quizzing in Canvas successful.

Guided Access

Guided Access must be turned on if your students are taking a LockDown Browser-required quiz on their iPad. Guided Access can be turned on through the iPad’s Settings. Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access.

LockDown Browser Error on the iPad

Some students may have difficulty accessing their quiz while using LockDown Browser on their iPad. If your student has the LockDown Browser app open, and is logged in to Canvas with the quiz page open, but a message appears that LockDown Browser is required, close the browser down completely. This includes removing it from the application tray (double tap the Home button, and then swipe the app up). Launch the LockDown Browser app again and sign in to Canvas to access the quiz. Your student should be able to access the quiz now.

Real-Time Quiz Activity

While your students are taking a quiz, you can see the time elapsed by student and scores as soon as students submit the quiz. While your students are taking the quiz, click the quiz in Canvas. Click Moderate This Quiz.
Once your students submit the quiz, you can view how long it took them to complete the quiz and their scores.

To help make your Canvas account more personal, we recommend you upload a profile photo to Canvas. We recommend your students also upload profile photos. To upload a profile photo, follow these steps.

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Click Account.
3. Click the circle where a photo should appear.
4. Select your profile picture. You can Upload a Picture, Take a Picture, or upload an image From Gravatar.

Customize Your Course Navigation Menu

As faculty members, you have the ability to customize the items that appear in your students’ course navigation menu.

Reordering the Menu

Choose the order that course navigation menu items appear for you and your students by following these steps.

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Click to enter your course.
3. Click Settings.
4. Drag and drop items to reorder them in the course navigation. Alternatively, you can click the gear icon, and then Move (follow the on-screen instructions).

This is helpful if you will not be using certain features in your course. Follow these steps to disable menu items.

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Click to enter your course.
3. Click Settings.
4. Drag and drop items to the section titled Drag items here to hide them from students.. Alternatively, you can click the gear icon, and then Disable.

To re-enable a menu item, click the gear icon next to it, and then Enable.

Students Unable to Submit a Turnitin Assignment

Occasionally, students receive an error message when attempting to submit an assignment using Turnitin. When this happens, it generally means the Turnitin needs to be enabled, or activated. Once you’ve created an assignment with Turnitin enabled, another page with the Assignment Inbox and Settings appears. You can also follow these steps to enable, or activate, Turnitin on established assignments by clicking the assignment first.

Click Settings, and then Optional settings (if desired). Verify your assignment settings, and then click Submit.

This enables, or activates, Turnitin and allows students to successfully submit assignments.

View this recorded workshop or recorded webinar for a refresher on using Turnitin with assignments.
